Books We Use

We have spent years sifting through books on landscape design, plants, hardscaping, decks, natural stone, etc. Here are some we have on our bookshelf.

Click here to jump directly to books on:

  • Plants
  • Design (hardscape and softscape)
  • Water Gardening

If you have any fantastic books on gardening, hardscapes, or landscaping in general, please email the title to us! We're always looking for more good books about what we do.

    1. Books About Plants, and Plant Care:

This is the encyclopedia of trees and shrubs for our area (zone 3-4.) Over 1600 photos, and care instructions. Written by Michael Dirr, professor of horticulture at the University of Georgia.

Another great reference for zone 3&4 plant selections.

This book has detailed care instructions, which is why I bought it.

Detailed care instructions for our climate--- awesome!

Definitive guide to pruning-- what, where, when, and how.

Perfect companion to Cass Turnbull's book (right.)

The other must-have book on plant care.

This book was recommended to me when I was in the U of Minnesota Master Gardener volunteer program, answering the public's lawn and garden questions.

Guide to growing and maintaining healthy indoor plants.

An authoritative guide to more than 500 herbs.

The other guide to herbs, with herb history, uses, and techniques.

Everything you need to know about how beautiful perennial gardens are conceived and created.

Mixing different colors and textures of perennials to create lively gardens.

    2. Hardscape and Garden Design:

Excellent book featuring over 300 photos showing different design possibilities with concrete pavers.

    Design ideas for "grand entrances"

This book describes the basics of how and why we need hardscapes. It has lots of pictures and diagrams showing installation.

This book is useful mainly for all the great photography to get your own creativity going. Shows what's possible.

A very user-friendly book which covers most aspects of designing gardens and spaces

This one is user-friendly, but also shows the technical aspects of making scale landscape drawings.

    More great garden design ideas.

A wonderful introduction to Japanese garden design, including history, photos, and detailed plans of Japanese gardens.

Here's one for you Container gardeners! All about design and use of pots in the garden.

    3. Water Gardening

Great book describing history, current trends, and specifics about construction and maintenance. Beautiful photography suitable for a coffee table book, too!

A how-to and design ideas for water gardening in smaller containers.

This is the book that gave me the inspiration to make a few Shishi-Odoshis (Japanese Deer-Scare.)

Gorgeous photos and idea for smaller water gardens.
